Best Milkshakes in Melbourne

Your girl was missing out…I’m sad to say I very rarely had milkshakes until a few years ago. Now I’m all in (much like with ramen noodles if you know what I’m talking about…) and I love a good milkshake. In fact, I’m perfectly fine having a milkshake as a meal….#pictureofhealth.

Anyway, so far there’s a clear standout in my list of the best milkshakes in Melbourne…you seriously CANNOT miss it (if you like oreo milkshakes like me lol). Read on to discover all the best milkshakes in Melbourne – this list will keep growing as we come out of lockdown and I venture back out into the real world. Let us know if you have any other milkshakes you want to see on this list!

THE BEST OF THE BEST: Oreo Shake From The Train Yard (Heidelberg)

Yes, Heidelberg is a beautiful city in Germany…but it’s also the place to be if you’re a Melbourne milkshake lover like me. The Train Yard is on Burgundy street and it’s oreo shake is to die for – I’m not even kidding. I would do questionable things for this milkshake, 100% (okay now that is a stretch…but you get my point).

Not only do you get milk, ice cream, and Oreo bits all mixed together in a decadent combination, but they even throw in two full Oreo cookies to soak in all the milkshake goodness. PRO TIP: save the Oreos for the end, and grab one of their amazing croissants or breakfast bagels while you’re at it!

P.S. I wish I could tell you what other kinds of shakes they have but I honestly cannot…because I could never betray my favorite Oreo shake and I never even look at the menu, I’m just laser focused on the Oreos. I will insist on a special trip just to get this shake, it’s that good!

Location: Train Yard – 184 Burgundy Street, Heidelberg

SUPER SATISFYING: Oreo Thickshake From Pinkie Cafe (Ivanhoe)

In case you couldn’t tell, I love chocolate and Oreos. Lucky for me, Pinkie Cafe in Ivanhoe has a fabulous Oreo thickshake that’s sweet and delicious, so much so that I almost dropped mine on the street but brought out some cat-like reflexes to save it. I couldn’t imagine missing out on this Oreo shake due to my own clumsiness.

Anyway, enjoy Oreo, ice cream, malt, and milk with the option to add peanut butter – highly recommended! I personally am not crazy about coffee and much prefer chocolate drinks, but there is a cappuccino thickshake too if that’s more your style. I also love their flaky croissants and there’s green smoothies and fresh juices if you’re looking for something a bit healthier.

Also….a Snickers smoothie?! You’ve got to be kidding me. Get on down to Pinkie and see what I’m talking about!

5-STAR SHAKE: Oreo Shake From Fairfield Boathouse (Fairfield)

If you don’t like Oreos, I’m sorry then this list just isn’t for you. Haha, just kidding – all of these places have amazing milkshakes in general, although the Oreo just happens to be my personal favorite. Definitely put Fairfield Boathouse on your list if you’re looking for a cookie-inspired chocolate shake and a mouthwatering breakfast at the same time.

Fairfield Boathouse offers views of the Yarra River and is a super charming location with a sort of rustic, historic feel. I absolutely love it and have taken my mom and best friend there when they visited. Also, if you like the quintessential Aussie breakfast of eggs on toast, the extra side of chorizo is to die-for (just a pro tip).

I have no shame about my Oreo shake obsession and I had mine in the afternoon, so you can visit the Boathouse for brekkie, lunch, or afternoon tea. I for one am definitely going back there soon!

PRETTY DAMN GOOD: Chocolate Shake From Bellboy Cafe (Brunswick East)

Bellboy Cafe is a great spot with ample indoor and outdoor seating, especially if you like to bring your dog everywhere like me (that’s a story for another day). I was pleasantly surprised by their chocolate milkshake – it was perfectly rich and chocolatey without being too much – although can you really ever have enough chocolate?

I thought the chocolate shake was an excellent precursor to my main breakfast of fried eggs on sourdough, although the only issue is I gulped down the chocolate shake so fast I filled myself up. Oh well, you live and you learn…and I would do it all again for a sip of that sweet chocolate shake.

There’s also vanilla, strawberry, and espresso shakes and the option to add malt. I stand by Bellboy’s bacon and egg breakfast bagel as the best in Melbourne so you may want to try this award-winning breakfast combo next time you’re feeling hangry!
